Town Hall Wedding
in Christiansfeld

A UNESCO World Heritage town built for quiet moments

Christiansfeld was founded by the Moravian Brethren in 1773 and has barely changed since. Its symmetrical streets, yellow ochre buildings, and distinctive stillness make it one of the most unusual wedding settings in Denmark. UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage Site in 2015. This guide covers everything worth knowing before your day.

The ceremony

The ceremony in
Christiansfeld

Ceremonies in Christiansfeld take place at Søstrehuset (the Sister House), a remarkable building from 1776 at the heart of the Moravian settlement. The house covers 4,000 m² and features long corridors, rococo stairs, and empire details that make it one of the most atmospheric ceremony rooms in Southern Denmark. Ceremonies are administered by Kolding Municipality. Contact Kolding for booking: www.kolding.dk.

The Brethren Square, the yellow ochre buildings, and the quiet lanes are all within easy walking distance of the ceremony location. Christiansfeld provides one of the most distinctive portrait settings in Southern Denmark — one that genuinely photographs unlike anywhere else in the region.

A suggested timeline

1

Arrive with time to take in the setting

Christiansfeld is small and easy to navigate. Give yourself time to walk through the old settlement before the ceremony begins.

2

The ceremony

A civil ceremony administered by Kolding Municipality. Quiet, personal, and in a setting that carries its own sense of occasion.

3

Brethren Square and ochre buildings — 20 to 30 minutes

The square and the distinctive yellow buildings immediately around the ceremony location are extraordinary for portraits. The most distinctive part of the day visually.

4

Gardens and quieter lanes — 20 to 30 minutes

The gardens and quieter paths of the old settlement give a softer, more intimate quality for later in the portrait session.

Portrait locations

The best portrait spots
near Christiansfeld

Christiansfeld is compact but extraordinary for portraits. The Brethren Square, the ochre buildings, and the gardens are all within walking distance.

1

Brødremenigheds Plads (Brethren Square)

The symmetrical square at the heart of the old Moravian settlement is unlike anything else in Denmark. The proportions, the ochre buildings, and the sense of stillness make it one of the most memorable portrait settings I work in.

2

Yellow ochre facades and lanes

The distinctive yellow ochre buildings of the old settlement and the quiet lanes between them give portraits a warm, timeless quality. Old facades, careful proportions, and centuries of calm.

3

The gardens and green areas

The gardens surrounding the old settlement have a peaceful, unhurried quality. Soft light, open space, and a calm that carries naturally into photographs.

4

Hejlsminde Strand

About 10 km from Christiansfeld on the Lillebælt coast. A wide beach with views across to Funen. A completely different atmosphere from the old town — open water, sky, and natural light. Already used by wedding photographers here and a natural way to end the portrait session.
