Getting married on Ærø
Ærø has welcomed couples from all over the world since 2008. The paperwork is simple, the ceremony is short and warm, and the whole island feels made for a wedding day. Here is how it works.
The ceremony
Ærøskøbing town hall, or one of the island’s official outdoor spots. The municipality’s wedding team offers more than 200 dates a year, weekdays with select Saturdays, and the ceremony itself is short, usually about ten minutes.
Getting there
I take the ferry from Fynshav, about an hour across calm water. Couples coming through Funen sail from Svendborg instead. Book your crossing ahead, especially in summer.
The paperwork
Handled online through Familieretshuset before you travel. If you need witnesses, ask the town hall when you book, arrangements vary. My guide to a civil wedding in Denmark covers the whole process.

on Ærø
By ferry. From Jutland and Germany the route is Fynshav to Søby, about an hour, and I sail that one with you. From Funen it is Svendborg to Ærøskøbing. Book your crossing ahead, especially for summer dates.
