Town Hall Wedding
in Esbjerg

North Sea harbour city with open skies, wide beaches, and portrait settings unlike anywhere else in Southern Denmark

Esbjerg is Denmark’s largest North Sea port city. Town hall weddings here have a completely different visual quality from the inland towns of Southern Jutland. The forest park at Dyrehaven, the open beach at Nordlige Hjerting Strand, and the coastal headland at Gulebjerg give portraits a genuine range that is hard to find anywhere else. This guide covers everything worth knowing before your day.

The ceremony

The ceremony in
Esbjerg

Civil ceremonies in Esbjerg take place at Skolegade 33, 6700 Esbjerg (the courthouse building, Esbjerg Ting og Arresthus). This is where I photograph all Esbjerg weddings. Contact Esbjerg Municipality for ceremony days, times, and booking at esbjergkommune.dk. Note that Ribe is also within Esbjerg Municipality since the 2007 reform.

Ceremony address confirmedSkolegade 33, 6700 Esbjerg. Contact Esbjerg Municipality for booking and ceremony times.

The defining quality of an Esbjerg wedding day is what comes after the ceremony. Deer in a forest park, open sand at the North Sea, or a headland above the Wadden Sea. Three completely different settings, all within 25 minutes of Skolegade 33.

A suggested timeline

1

Arrive at least 30 minutes early

Give yourself at least 30 minutes to park and find the ceremony room without rushing. There are more small details on a wedding day than most couples expect, so the extra time is worth having.

2

The ceremony

Civil ceremony administered by Esbjerg Municipality. Warm, personal, and straightforward.

3

Dyrehaven, 20 to 30 minutes

About 10 minutes from Skolegade 33. Ancient oaks, open clearings, and fallow deer. The calm green contrast to the open coast.

4

Hjerting or Gulebjerg, 30 to 60 minutes

For longer packages: the open sand at Nordlige Hjerting Strand or the elevated views at Gulebjerg above the Wadden Sea. Two completely different settings for the same afternoon.

Portrait locations

The best portrait spots
near Esbjerg

Esbjerg has portrait settings with a completely different character from the rest of Southern Denmark. Forest, open beach, and an elevated coastal headland give the day genuine visual range. Full location guide with photos and directions.

1

Esbjerg Dyrehaven

A forest park on Gl. Vardevej, about 10 minutes from Skolegade 33. Fallow deer roam freely through the mature trees and open clearings. Calm and unhurried, with a soft quality that contrasts completely with the open coast.

2

Nordlige Hjerting Strand

The northern stretch of Hjerting beach on the Wadden Sea coast, about 15 minutes away. Wide sand, open water, and a sky that fills the frame from every angle. It photographs well in almost any season.

3

Gulebjerg

A natural headland north of Hjerting, about 25 minutes from the ceremony. Elevated views across the tidal flats toward Fanø. Open grass, wide coastal sky, and a visual character that is unlike anything inland.

Practical information

Getting there and parking

Esbjerg city centre has good central parking. The portrait locations are all a short drive from the ceremony.

The parking area I use when photographing at Skolegade 33. A short walk from the courthouse and the most practical option for a wedding day in Esbjerg.
