Where weddings in Sønderborg Municipality take place

Weddings in Sønderborg Municipality for international couples do not take place at Sønderborg Town Hall. They take place at one of two venues on Fridays between 8:30 and 14:00. The location alternates by calendar week:

Det Gamle Rådhus, Gråsten (odd weeks)Torvet 8, 6300 Gråsten. The former council chamber in the historic town hall, now a hotel. The ceremony room overlooks Gråsten Palace Lake. Gråsten is 15 minutes by car from central Sønderborg.
Nørherredhus Hotel, Nordborg (even weeks)Nørherredhus Hotel, Nordborg, Als. A hotel ceremony venue on the island of Als, approximately 25 minutes by car from central Sønderborg. Hotel parking available on site.

Contact the Marriage Office to confirm which venue is scheduled for your date. Document presentation is the Thursday before at: Borgerservice Sønderborg, Holger Drachmanns Plads 5, 2., 6400 Sønderborg. Phone: +45 88 72 51 84. Email: vielser@sonderborg.dk. Witnesses can be provided by the municipality if needed.

A suggested timeline

1

Thursday before: document presentation

Present your passports in person at Borgerservice, Holger Drachmanns Plads 5, Sønderborg. This is mandatory for international couples. Opening hours: Monday to Wednesday 8:00–15:00, Thursday 8:00–17:00.

2

Friday: arrive 20 minutes before the ceremony

Travel to your confirmed venue — either Gråsten or Nordborg. Give yourself time to park, settle, and take in the setting before the ceremony begins.

3

The ceremony — approximately 20 minutes

The registrar from Sønderborg Municipality leads the ceremony at your confirmed venue.

4

Portraits — 30 to 90 minutes

After the ceremony, portrait locations depend on which venue you are at and your package. Both venues have strong portrait options immediately nearby.

Portrait locations

The best portrait spots
near Sønderborg

Portrait options vary depending on which venue your ceremony is at. Both locations have beautiful settings immediately on the doorstep.

1

Gråsten: Palace gardens and lake

If your ceremony is at Det Gamle Rådhus, Gråsten Palace and its gardens are a 10-minute walk. The palace lake is directly outside. Extraordinary portrait settings that require no travel after the ceremony.

2

Nordborg: Als countryside and Nordborg Lake

If your ceremony is at Nørherredhus Hotel, the hotel grounds, Nordborg Lake, and the Als countryside give you calm, natural portrait settings immediately around the venue.

3

Sønderborg Castle

For longer packages, Sønderborg Castle and the Als Fjord waterfront are worth the short drive. The medieval castle on the fjord is one of the most photographically distinctive settings in Southern Denmark.
