Portrait locations
in Gråsten

Three locations I use for wedding portraits in Gråsten. All within reach of the ceremony at Det Gamle Rådhus on Torvet. Each one photographs completely differently.

Palace Lake

At the ceremony venue

The palace lake is directly in front of Det Gamle Rådhus on Torvet. The moment you step out of the ceremony, it is already there. Water, trees, and the scale of the lake create a calm, unhurried portrait setting with no travel needed.

The reflections in the lake are particularly strong in the morning when the light is still low. The jetty that extends into the water gives portraits a strong horizontal line. The mix of open water and surrounding trees means you can choose between bright and dappled light without moving far.

Gråsten
Palace gardens

10–15 min walk 4 min drive

Gråsten Palace is the Danish Royal Family’s summer residence. The English-style gardens are open to the public when the family is not in residence, and include manicured lawns, gravel paths, and the palace building itself as a backdrop. It is one of the most exceptional portrait settings in Southern Denmark.

The route from Torvet to the palace along Slotsgade is itself worth photographing — a quiet, tree-lined approach that builds to the palace grounds. Free parking is available near the gardens at Slotsgade 26.

NoteThe palace and gardens are closed to the public when the Royal Family is in residence, typically during July and into August. Check graastenraadhus.dk for announcements before the day.

skovene

10 min walk 3 min drive

Gråstenskovene is the forest alongside the palace grounds. Where the gardens are open and formal, the forest is enclosed and green — tall trees, soft light through the canopy, and paths that lead away from the ceremony into something quieter.

The forest gives portraits a completely different atmosphere from the lake and the gardens. Dappled light, natural framing, and the kind of stillness that works especially well later in the afternoon when the light drops through the trees.
